AI Backers See Billions in Gains Before Anthropic Public Debut

Early and late stage investors are set for significant financial returns as Anthropic approaches a potential two trillion dollar valuation.

By Mariana Delgado ·

The race to capitalize on artificial intelligence is producing some of the largest financial windfalls in recent history. As Anthropic prepares for a public listing expected later this year, the company is on track to be valued at up to two trillion dollars. This trajectory ensures that both early supporters and later stage investors will see substantial returns on their capital. Even before the official stock market debut, the stakes held by key venture capitalists and early backers already represent billions of dollars in value. According to Bloomberg data, these gains are realized even at the company's most recent private market valuation of 965 billion dollars.

For many of these investors, the journey began years ago when the startup was a fraction of its current size. Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, made an investment in the company's Series A round in 2021. At that time, PitchBook data indicated the startup was valued at 461 million dollars. Today, Schmidt holds approximately one percent of the company. Even at the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly 10 billion dollars. This early entry point allowed his position to appreciate dramatically as the technology sector expanded.

Later stage investors also captured significant value, though their entry prices were much higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a 6 billion dollar check to Anthropic last year. By then, the company was already valued at 183 billion dollars. That massive late stage bet is now worth 17 billion dollars. Analysts suggest this position has the potential to double again once the IPO is completed. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D funding round, has invested more than 1 billion dollars over time. Their stake is currently valued at 14 billion dollars, reflecting the rapid growth in the AI lab's market position.

Other prominent firms joined the funding rounds more recently. Sequoia, a well known venture capital firm, backed the AI lab for the first time earlier this year. The company was already valued at 380 billion dollars at that point. Sequoia's 3 billion dollar investment secured about one percent ownership. This move has already more than doubled their initial investment. Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested 35 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round. They have since added another 400 million dollars. Their stake is now worth billions, although Kutcher left the firm this year to launch a new venture capital company.

Spark Capital stands out for its long term association with the company. It is the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested 75 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round, when the valuation stood at 5 billion dollars. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to reach 7 billion dollars. As the company moves toward its public debut, these figures illustrate the staggering financial impact of backing leading AI developers during their early and growth stages.

The upcoming IPO will serve as the final marker for these early gains. While the current private valuation already places these investments in the multi-billion dollar range, the public market debut could push these numbers even higher. For investors like Schmidt, Iconiq, and Menlo Ventures, the next few months will determine the final magnitude of their returns. The market will soon decide if the two trillion dollar valuation is accurate, potentially reshaping the wealth landscape for these key supporters of the AI sector.
