The era of speculation regarding the availability of Tesla’s fully autonomous robotaxi has concluded with a specific timeline for private ownership.
During the company’s third-quarter 2026 earnings call held on October 21, Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy stated that Tesla intends to begin delivering Cybercab units to customers before the end of the current year. This announcement provides a definitive date for when the purpose-built vehicle will be accessible to the general public, resolving prior uncertainty about the timeline for its market entry.
Moravy detailed that production of the Cybercab is currently active at Gigafactory Texas. However, he noted that every unit rolling off the assembly line is presently being allocated to Tesla’s internal Robotaxi fleet. He explained that as operations expand, the company plans to primarily deliver these fully designed autonomous vehicles to external customers. The Cybercab is positioned as the first such vehicle to be offered for private purchase.
The initial phase of customer deliveries is expected to be modest in scale. Moravy indicated that Tesla will start small to allow the company time to refine its delivery logistics, ownership models, and fleet management processes. This cautious approach is intended to help the firm gain experience with operating autonomous vehicles outside of its direct, internal control.
CEO Elon Musk reinforced the strategic focus of the Cybercab, emphasizing that it is designed primarily as a "transport-as-a-service" offering rather than a conventional personal ownership vehicle like the Model 3, Model Y, or the upcoming Roadster. Musk stated that the vast majority of Cybercab units will remain Tesla-owned and will operate within the company's service network, distinguishing it from other models in the lineup.
The Cybercab is a two-seater vehicle engineered without a steering wheel or pedals, relying entirely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving suite. Production of the vehicle began in February of this year. In early September, Tesla launched its public rideshare service, deploying early units into the Robotaxi operation. The company has previously indicated that it aims to price the Cybercab at approximately $30,000.
Regarding the broader rollout of autonomy, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Head of AI, indicated during the call that unsupervised Full Self-Driving is expected to ship to consumer vehicles in the second quarter of 2027. However, early buyers or fleet operators of the Cybercab may encounter geographically restricted autonomous operation. This limitation is attributed to regulatory agencies that are still catching up to the technology's capabilities, presenting some hurdles ahead of full-scale deliveries.
